Linocut Print "They Must Catch You" Rabbit and Tomatoes 8x10
$30.00
This is an original handmade linocut print about a rabbit that lived in our garden.
In 2019, we were lucky enough to buy a house with a beautiful backyard where we planted fruit trees and started a vegetable garden. That first summer, we noticed an unusually large cottontail rabbit would show up every few weeks and help itself to our garden but we didn't mind, we love rabbits. The next year, another unusually large cottontail would show up again, and then the year after that, and after that. We figured that it might have been the same one, coming back to a safe, abundant place.
We were told that does (female rabbits) will return to the same place they feel safe in and every year we'd find at least one nest of babies or the evidence of one. If we found a nest, we'd place a stake where it was to avoid it and we'd keep an eye out for her and always see her hovering about around dusk. Unfortunately one year she lost a nest to sudden cold rain and we buried her babies in the corner of our garden. It was always more joyful to find a completely empty nest.
Late last summer, we found her laying down on her side under our ripe tomato plants. There didn't seem to be any injury, and it looked like she had passed away peacefully in our garden.
We've seen no nests since.
"All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed." -Richard Adams, Watership Down
This is an 8x10" print with black on Awagami Shin Abe 105 lb paper with deckle edges. Signed, titled, and numbered.
The process of linocut involves carving out the excess of a design from a block of linoleum. A thin layer of ink is rolled onto the finished stamp and then the inked stamp is pressed into paper. Pressing involves a large flat press but often has to be finished with hand-burnishing with a baren. Due to the way the hand-pressing process works, there are slight variations between each print such as texture or stray marks. Each print is unique in that way, which is what makes linocut printing the way it is.
Please allow 2-3 business days after ordering for the item to ship. Art is unframed and shipped in a flat envelope with backing.
